New Year, New Resolutions

Every year like millions of others I create a New Year’s resolution. Most of the time, I don’t see it through and by the following New Year reflect on the failure of yet another resolution. This year I’m going to focus on positive change. A couple of my friends have implemented a positivity jar this past year. They write one positive thing that has happened each day and then reflect on them at the end of the year. I believe this is a great resolution to have. Again, it might be hard to attain or keep track of throughout the year like many resolutions in past years but as always, you can tailor it your life which is what I plan on doing. If you don’t have a jar then use a calendar and jot down a positive note for each day. If you don’t have time to write a sentence every day then take the time to write a positive note once a week. You can even record it in a personal journal or your phone.

I believe that over the course of a year, that you will see your perspective on life change as well. Whenever a bad situation occurs, you will be forced to find the good in the situation as well. The longer you implement the positivity jar, the more conditioned your mind will be to see the positive in every negative situation. I know you probably snorted with skepticism right there but I will tell you that living in positivity can change your life.

Take it from me, a person who has had so many bad things happen to her. I figured out a couple of years ago that if I was ever going to survive this life, I would have to find the good in the bad. In my life, it has always seemed that for every positive thing that occurred that there was a negative thing that occurred just about the same time. I could go on and on with examples but I’ll just give you one for now. Two years ago, I had just gotten out of a relationship and was finally self-sufficient on my own without struggling financially. I got pulled over two days before Christmas, found out that I had an old ticket that I thought I had paid off but hadn’t by $50, and my car was impounded. $700 and 6 hours later, I was able to get my car back. So much for getting back on my feet…but seriously, all these bad things taught me to look for the good in every situation. Having bad things happen to me helped me appreciate the good times more. All the people I’ve lost taught me to value the time I have with the people I love. So even if you don’t try the positivity jar this year, try to focus on the good even despite the bad and see how your outlook on life changes. Have you ever heard the saying, it’s not the bad times that define us but how we deal with those bad times? Focusing on the negative will just create a life of negativity but focusing on the positive will create a life of positivity.

Whatever your resolutions are, I wish you nothing but the best with many blessings for the New Year!
