The 5P’s. Successful recovery requires healthy balance of the brain’s bio-chemistry, the necessary medical care, and healthful living. These elements are necessary but not sufficient. For a recovery that is built to last, they must be anchored into a social foundation of “the 3P’s” [Insel]: People – having a fun, vibrant network of friends and colleagues; Place – living somewhere that is energizing, makes you happy, and that is safe; and Purpose – having a life mission that serves others and is bigger than self. Further, they must be animated and infused by a “fourth P”, Perseverance – the will to succeed, and to never quit. The “fifth P” is Presence, or situational awareness. [Conor Martin] When your plan or your purpose is disrupted, Presence allows you to adapt, to change your tune according to what is being played around you. That comes by putting ego and self aside, managing expectations with reality. Presence is the essence of mediation and also can infer a detachment from the self, an examination of what is actually happening versus how you are feeling.
