A Healthy Mind Starting Now

It’s January, a time of the year when people make the resolution to throw on their workout gear and make a healthier version of themselves. Usually, this doesn’t last very long. I know, because I was one of them. But a new body shouldn’t be your only reason for wanting to be healthier. What about a healthier mind?

It may not always be as fun to eat healthy, but it does wonders for your mental well being. The vitamins and minerals in fruits and vegetables give your mind a much needed boost. When you eat right, you’re being good to your mind and giving it the things that a daily multivitamin can’t. I know that when I eat badly, I feel sluggish, but when I get at least some fruits and vegetables in my diet everyday, I’m in a better mood.

Please don’t think that this is me saying that you should stop taking your medication. I haven’t stopped taking mine and never will. As far as what you should do, that’s between you and your doctor, but don’t think that just because you’re eating healthier means that you’re “cured.” That’s dangerous. Always talk to your doctor.

Yes, exercising will of course, help you too. You don’t need to join a gym. You can always go for a thirty minute walk every day with a friend or by yourself. That’s a lot less expensive than buying a gym membership that a lot of people don’t use anyway. Walking is one of the best exercises out there and it helped me lose weight. If you want to make it more challenging, try walking for an hour. But don’t do this right off the bat. Start with thirty minutes and talk to your doctor or another professional about when you should increase how long you stay out there.

You don’t have to turn into a diet and exercise superhero that posts inspirational selfies about their workouts and smoothies (not that there’s anything wrong with that, it’s just not for everyone). You can make small changes a little at a time and see what a difference it makes. You can and will make a healthier you in 2016 not just for the physical aspect of it, but for the mental part, too.

Also, if you fall off the bandwagon with a missed workout or a bad meal, it’s ok, we all do. It’s called being human. Just get right back on and don’t beat yourself up. Remember, we’ve all done it.

Here’s to you, have a great 2016!
