The Center for Multicultural Development, a division of the California Institute for Mental Health, is launching a pilot project designed to increase the capacity of faith-based organizations (FBOs) to provide mental health prevention and early intervention services through peer support. The purpose of the project is to reduce stigma related to mental illness and psychological distress within faith based organizations.
It also strives to build the skills of traditional sources of support within the community to intervene, refer, and counsel individuals at-risk of or experiencing mental illness, who seek support from faith based organizations to manage their crisis. It is also an opportunity to empower the community to create culturally responsive strategies for identifying and managing mental illness in ethnic and cultural communities.
