Lessons from Leaders with Bipolar Disorder: Advocating for What You Need at Work

Dr. Constance (Connie) Hadley from the Institute for Life at Work and Boston University’s Questrom School of Business believes employees diagnosed with bipolar disorder have unique talents and perspectives to bring to their organization. In this webinar, she describes research with successful individuals with bipolar disorder that was recently published in Harvard Business Review (“3 Ways to Support Employees with Bipolar Disorder” co-authored with Hooria Jazaieri and Hillary Anger Elfenbein).

Dr. Hadley and her colleagues recommend employers take three steps:

(1) modify job features

(2) train managers

(3) promote a culture of performance and compassion

Dr. Hadley explains how these accommodations can elevate the work experiences and bring out success among those diagnosed with bipolar disorder and other mental health conditions.

Dr. Constance (Connie) Noonan Hadley is an organizational psychologist whose goal is to support a rich and fulfilling life at work for all employees. She is the founder of the Institute for Life at Work and a research associate professor at the Boston University Questrom School of Business. She holds a PhD in organizational behavior from Harvard University, an MBA from Wharton, and a BA from Princeton University.

Dr. Hadley is an expert and well-known speaker on the future of work, team dynamics, psychological safety and trust, burnout, employee loneliness, well-being at work, inclusive cultures, and career decision-making.
