Dr. Fulwiler received his M.D. from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and his Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Harvard University. He completed his residency in Psychiatry at McLean Hospital, Harvard Medical School. He was a Research Associate at Harvard University from 1990-1994 when he joined the faculty of Tufts University Medical School. In 2003 he moved to the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Massachusetts Medical School where he is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Director of the Center for Mental Health Services Research. He is board-certified in Adult Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine. ??Dr. Fulwiler’s research has focused on health services research for people with co-occurring mental health and substance abuse disorders involved in the criminal justice system, the neural mechanisms of emotion regulation and mindfulness-based interventions. His research has been supported by grants from SAMHSA, the National Institute of Justice, and the National Institutes of Health. He was recently awarded a grant from NIH to study the impact of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction on depressive symptoms and health behaviors and to characterize the changes in neural mechanisms of emotion regulation in response to this intervention. ??His background in mindfulness includes professional training in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Depression. He is also a practicing psychiatrist specializing in the use of mindfulness-based psychotherapy, including Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, in the treatment of mood, anxiety and addiction disorders.
