Something I Am Proud Of:

I am proud because I am aware of my illness. When I was diagnosed at 21 years old I was very afraid to take medication. My life became chaotic and the first 5 years were hard but there came a time when I learned to life with my illness. Even while being a bipolar patient I was able to study a university degree in less than the duration of the degree, I learned to play the guitar, the cuatro, and the ukulele, I learned singing, and I developed a successful professional career. I took psychotherapy seriously and learned to self-manage and relate to my surroundings which allowed me to have 7 years of stability and a successful marriage. Despite the crisis from the illness that have arisen along the way, I was touched by a wonderful man. Due to the health crisis in Venezuela, it has been impossible for me to access psychotherapy and in many occasions to not have access to medications, but even so I manage to keep functional, in all the movements of my life: family, work, and music. The crisis has been an impulse for me, to keep going since I am not the mother of a beautiful child. Even with this disorder parenthood has been the best experience of my life. I have had to prepare myself and try harder to be stable and with love and dedication to be the best possible version with myself, my family, and my circles. I am very proud of myself and how far I’ve come and how I have inspired others to break the taboo of mental illness.

Advice For Newly Diagnosed:

Take your medication. I know that sometimes you will think or feel that you will not need it, especially when hypomania is activated and you may come to believe that you are well. Also, psychotherapy has helped me to know myself, to learn to know my triggers, and what changes in my life when a crisis is about to begin. When you are depressed remember that depression does not define you. You are not the disease. Be kind to yourself and connect with what you love the most. You are not alone.
