Stigma

I wanted to start off this month’s blog by saying that I’m so thankful that I live in a society where I can both be honest about my mental illness and reach out to others. I know that we used to live in a time where you pretty much couldn’t talk about any mental illness, but now there are so many people fighting the stigma.

I am proud to say that the reactions I’ve gotten have been 99% positive when I’ve told them that I have bipolar disorder. Yes, I did have one person who reacted in a closed minded way, but I don’t need people like that in my life.

The truth is that you will get some people that will react a little negatively. I’m happy to say that those people are in the minority, but the negativity does exist. It hurts. I promise you, I know. But please know that more and more people are becoming understanding about it. Times are changing and we’re moving in the right direction.

Remember, there are people everywhere, such as the people on this wonderful website, that are going through something similar to you. I’ve been very surprised as to how much people can relate. There is most definitely a positive community for you out there. Be brave and be strong.

See you soon!
