The Holidays and Mood Disorder: Pieces of Gratitude

Author: Minnie Almader, Ed. D. and retired mental health counselor

My father lived with a mood disorder until the age of eighty-seven. As I decorate his grave with a Christmas wreath, pieces of gratitude fill my heart. I am grateful he managed to join the Army as an immigrant from Mexico at age eighteen. This opportunity led to his U. S. citizenship. Now, he is laid to rest in the military cemetery. It was COVID 19 that ended his life. And I feel gratitude that he did not die in a car accident while he was self-medicating with alcohol most of his life.

Our family is thriving. The journey of healing for my mom who did not understand my father’s mental health diagnosis is a work in progress. The trouble that results from a dual diagnosis of substance abuse and a mood disorder is overwhelming for a family.

I am grateful to friends, family and organizations such as the IBPF that reduce the shame and secrets we keep when someone we love is diagnosed with a mood disorder. I look forward to World Bipolar Day on March 30, 2026, it is wonderful to meet volunteers and/or survivors who share stories that help others.

Holidays are diverse and can be celebrated in various ways across different cultures and religions. May your holidays be filled with many pieces of gratitude.
