Nine years ago this December, my mental illness erupted through the surface of my otherwise regular life. Work was a snowstorm of activity with the holidays approaching, and I remember feeling super stressed out trying to keep all my end-of-the-year meetings with my many clients. This, on top of buying gifts for everyone on my list, which had doubled compared to previous years. Because as a new wife I took on the duty of shopping for my husband’s side of the family since we had been married for two years.

It’s been over eight years since I was first diagnosed with mental illness. I have bipolar disorder type 1 and have been blogging about living with my condition for three years now. As a mental health advocate, people who are in the exact same place I was years ago sometimes email me asking for help. What would I recommend to help them get better?
Yoga Helps Me to Connect the Dots
Last month I pulled a muscle in my neck while reaching into the backseat at a stop light for a book my son had dropped and couldn’t reach. Well I couldn’t reach it either, apparently, injuring myself pretty badly. After dealing with the pain for 24 hours, the next day I decided to find a hot yoga class to help me stretch out the affected muscle. A quick internet search and I was in luck! A studio in town offered a new client special - a reduced rate for a month-long membership where I could take unlimited classes. Score!
I’ll be the first to admit that loving someone with bipolar disorder is not easy. My husband will be the second person to tell you this. We’ve certainly had our share of major ups and downs, but we’ve managed to make it through the past eight and a half years of my life so far with bipolar type 1, and I’m confident that if we’ve made it this far, we’ll be in it for the long haul.
